This oak which has been buried in Peat Bogs or in very wet ground yields and has changed the characteristic dark brown to black colour of Bog Oak. If buried for a century or more, the wood is chemically modified by the action of the water and the acids to change the colour through its thickness. It also makes the wood harder and more brittle. It is very rare. Products do vary in colour.
